Congressman Mark Messmer has used his social media platform to criticize Democrats for the ongoing federal government shutdown, which he refers to as the "#SchumerShutdown." In a series of tweets posted on November 6 and 7, 2025, Messmer alleges that essential workers and families are being harmed by the continued closure.

On November 6, Messmer wrote, "It is Day of the #SchumerShutdown, and air traffic controllers are working without pay. Some have reportedly taken a second job to make ends meet. Republicans voted to keep them paid. Democrats blocked it. Democrats are making air travel dangerous!"

Later that day, he highlighted local impacts in Indiana's 8th District: "Every day that the Democrats insist on keeping the federal government closed, more Hoosiers across #IN08 are suffering. @VCHDevv reps explained how devastating things are for Hoosier families who will no longer receive support from the Women, Infants, and Children program."

On November 7, Messmer addressed military personnel affected by the shutdown: "After days of the #SchumerShutdown, American troops and defense personnel are still NOT receiving a paycheck. Our warfighters deserve better than the shameful political tricks of the Democrats. Dems need to open the federal Government and pay the troops!"

Government shutdowns occur when Congress fails to pass appropriations legislation funding federal agencies or when such legislation is vetoed by the President. During these periods, many federal employees work without pay or face furloughs until funding resumes. Essential services like air traffic control and national defense continue operating but can be strained by lack of compensation for staff.

The Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program provides nutritional assistance to low-income pregnant women, mothers, infants, and children; disruptions in its funding can have significant effects on vulnerable populations.

Messmer represents Indiana's 8th congressional district in Congress.
