The House of Representatives has passed H.R. 4446, known as the Focused Assistance and Skills Training for Veterans' Employment and Transition Success (FAST VETS) Act. The bill was introduced by Rep. Mark Messmer (R-IN) and aims to make the Veterans Readiness and Employment (VR&E) program more adaptable for veterans with service-connected disabilities who are returning to the workforce.

“Indiana’s 8th Congressional District is home to nearly 40,000 Hoosier veterans who answered the call of duty to serve and protect our nation. I am honored to support these veterans and those across America with the resources they deserve,” said Rep. Messmer. “I am proud to support the FAST VETS Act to give those brave veterans who were injured during their service better and more efficient tools from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to re-enter the workforce.”

The VR&E program provides services such as job training, education, employment accommodations, resume development, and coaching on job-seeking skills for veterans. Under current guidelines, veterans can request changes to their vocational goals based only on personal interests, which has made it harder for the program to maintain clear objectives.

The FAST VETS Act addresses this by setting clearer standards for updating a veteran’s vocational rehabilitation plan not just when interests change but also when there is a change in disability or when another plan would better help achieve rehabilitation goals.
