Little Giants Close Out 2022 With 27-Point Home Win

The Wabash basketball team got a 37-point showing from the bench on the way to a 90-63 victory against the Edgewood Eagles at home Friday to close out the 2022 calendar year.

The Little Giants (9-3) had three players score in double figures, led by Edreece Redmond, who had 21 points to finish one point shy of his career-best single-game total. Avery Beaver tacked on a career-high 18 points from the bench, and Champ McCorkle helped out with 12 points off the bench.

 

Wabash trailed Edgewood (1-11) 11-5 in the first three-and-a-half minutes before the Little Giants rallied with an 8-2 run to tie the game at 13-13 with 12:49 remaining in the first half. The teams traded baskets for a 19-19 tied with 9:21 left on the first-half clock before Wabash rode a 6-1 scoring run with baskets from Champ McCorkle and Vinny Buccilla to move in front 25-20. Redmond eventually gave the Little Giants a 10-point lead with a three-pointer with 1:40 left to play in the opening period before taking a 42-30 to the locker room at halftime.

 

The visiting Eagles trimmed the lead to nine points at 42-33 in the opening minutes of the second half. Wabash answered with another scoring run to boost the lead to 19 points midway through the period. The Little Giants maintained the lead throughout the final period, moving in front by as many as 30 points with 2:56 left to play before settling for the 27-point win.

 

The Wabash offense was very productive from downtown, knocking down nine three-point shots on 22 attempts. Beaver was the most prolific shooter for the Little Giants, draining three treys in the contest.

 

The Wabash defense held Edgewood shooters to just 36.2 percent from the field (21-of-58), including 25 percent from three-point range (4-of-16).

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 33-28 advantage, Wabash went on a 7-0 run with 2:13 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Sam Comer, to increase its lead to 40-28. The Little Giants maintained that lead and entered halftime with a 42-30 advantage. Wabash did most of its first-half damage in the paint, scoring 30 of its 42 points close to the basket.

Following intermission, Wabash kept widening that lead, expanding it to 78-56 before going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Styles McCorkle's three, to grow the lead to 86-56 with 2:56 to go in the contest. Wabash shot well from three-point range in the half, hitting seven shots from deep to score 21 of its 48 points.

» The Little Giants grabbed 35 rebounds, including six offensive boards that led to 10 second-chance points. Edgewood recorded 36 rebounds with 11 offensive boards for five second-chance points.

» Jake Schroeckenthaler led Edgewood in scoring with 18 points while adding 13 rebounds. Adam Baierl picked up 10 points.
