Wabash Captures Two Wins at Luther Duals

The Wabash wrestling team competed in a triangular dual meet in Decorah, Iowa, Saturday afternoon. The sixth-ranked Little Giants defeated Wisconsin-Stevens Point 31-8 before knocking off the 25th-ranked host Luther College Norse 30-17 in the second match.
 
Wabash scored five consecutive wins to open the dual meet against Wisconsin-Stevens Point. James Day scored an 8-5 win at 125 pounds to give the Little Giants a 3-0 lead. Arlie Benson earned a 7-1 victory in his 133-pound bout to add another three points to the Wabash total. Evan Burge picked up a 9-1 major decision at 141 pounds to boost the Little Giants to a 10-0 lead.
 
Daniel Uribe scored a tech fall with a 21-3 score in his bout at 149 pounds. Ayden Lutes won his 157-pound bout with an 11-3 major decision for a 19-0 Wabash lead. Ray Arebalo notched a 6-1 decision at 174 pounds. Caden Friedt won 7-3 at 197 pounds, and Jack Heldt closed out the afternoon with a pin at 2:44 into his heavyweight bout to secure the 31-8 team victory.
 
Day got Wabash off to a good start in the day's second match. He picked up an 8-0 major decision at 125 pounds to put the Little Giants up early 4-0. Blake McGee scored a 17-1 tech fall at 133 pounds for a 9-0 Wabash advantage, followed by a pin by Evan Burge just 1:18 into his 141-pound match to put the Little Giants in front 15-0.
 
Luther responded with three consecutive victories before Arebalo ended the streak with a pin in the final three seconds of his match at 174 pounds to give Wabash a 21-13 lead. Chase Baczek pinned Donovan Corn at 4:47 into their 184-pound bout. Luther closed to 27-17 with one match remaining. Heldt scored the final three points with a 4-0 victory at heavyweight to close the day for Wabash with a 30-17 win.
