Wabash Trio Named To 2022 D3football.com All-Region 4 Team
Three members of the Wabash College football earned 2022 D3football.com All-Region 4 Team honors. Junior tight end Penn Stoller received First Team All-Region 4 honors. Junior quarterback Liam Thompson received a Second Team All-Region 4 selection. Junior wide receiver Derek Allen, Jr. was a Third Team All-Region 4 honoree.
Stoller, a 2022 All-North Coast Athletic Conference First Team selection, earns all-region honors for the first time in his career. He ranked second in the conference and tied for fifth in the region in touchdown receptions with nine scoring catches. Stoller finished eighth in the NCAC and 17th in the region with 691 receiving yards. Stoller caught 41 passes and averaged 16.9 yards per catch to lead the Little Giants this season. He finished with more than 100 receiving yards in three games in 2022, including a career-best 140 yards and one score against Ohio Wesleyan. Stoller caught a season-high six passes for 116 yards and one TD against Wittenberg, then matched that total with six receptions for 92 yards and a career-best three touchdowns versus Hiram.
Thompson was selected to the all-region second team for the second consecutive season. The two-time First Team All-NCAC and NCAC Offensive Player of the Year selection in 2021 and 2022 led Division III in passing yards with 3,588 and total offense with an average of 33.7 yards per game through the regular season. Thompson ranked sixth in Division III with 34 passing touchdowns, fifth in completion percentage (251-of-349 for 71.92 percent), and sixth in passing efficiency with a rating of 186.4. He broke Wabash and conference single-season records for passing yards, passing efficiency, and completion percentage. Thompson's 34 TD throws tied for second in Wabash single-season history. He ran for 349 yards and seven more scores to finish with 248 points and was responsible for an average of 24.8 points per game, second-most among Division III players through the regular season. Thompson broke the Wabash single-game record for touchdown passes with seven in a win over Hiram and the Wabash single-game mark for consecutive completions with 19 at Oberlin. He threw for a career-best 450 yards against Kenyon, the last of seven straight games with at least 300 passing yards.
Allen, Jr. earned third team all-region honors for the first time in his career after being selected to the All-NCAC First Team in 2022. The junior wide receiver hauled in a team-best 57 passes for 913 yards with eight touchdown receptions. He ranked second in the conference in receiving yards and third in touchdown receptions. Allen, Jr. finished the regular season sixth in the region in receiving yards per game with an average of 91.3 and tied for seventh in the region in TD catches. He opened the season with a career-best eight receptions for 172 yards and three TDs against Hamden-Sydney, then matched that reception total with eight catches versus Wittenberg and Ohio Wesleyan.
The teams, selected in balloting by Region 4 sports information directors and D3football.com staff, were chosen from 159 nominations by full Division III member schools. A total of 75 players were selected. Players nominated for All-Region are eligible to be considered for D3football.com All-America honors, which will be announced on the evening of Dec. 16 in D3football.com's pregame coverage for Stagg Bowl XLIX.
