Congressman Mark Messmer, who represents Indiana's 8th congressional district, used his social media platform to criticize Democratic lawmakers over an ongoing government shutdown. In a series of posts, Messmer called for an immediate end to what he referred to as the "#SchumerShutdown."

On October 17, 2025, Messmer posted: "DEMOCRATS MUST END THE #SchumerShutdown NOW!"

Later that same day, he highlighted the impact of the shutdown on local agriculture in Indiana. On October 17, 2025, he wrote: "The Democrats’ #SchumerShutdown is harming Hoosier farmers across Indiana’s 8th! If the Democrats’ political stunt doesn’t end soon, farmers like Daryl can’t complete vital conservation projects that benefit our community! End the Schumer Shutdown!"

Three days later, on October 20, Messmer continued his criticism by accusing Democratic lawmakers of neglecting their responsibilities during the shutdown. He stated: "It is Day of the #SchumerShutdown, and Democrats chose to attend anti-America rallies instead of getting back to work. Dems prefer Communist Party sponsored gatherings over paying American troops and funding vital child poverty programs. End the Schumer Shutdown Now!"

The term "#SchumerShutdown" refers to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and has been used by some Republican lawmakers to attribute blame for government funding lapses on Democratic leadership. Government shutdowns typically occur when Congress fails to pass appropriations bills or continuing resolutions needed to fund federal agencies.

Messmer's statements come amid heightened partisan tensions over federal budget negotiations and reflect broader disputes between Republicans and Democrats about responsibility for interruptions in government services.
