Congressman Mark Messmer, who represents Indiana's 8th congressional district, made several posts on October 1, 2025, addressing both religious observance and ongoing political events.

In his first post of the day, Messmer extended greetings to constituents observing Yom Kippur. He wrote, "I wish everyone in #IN08 celebrating Yom Kippur a very meaningful fast on this most sacred day. May you be sealed in the Book of Life for health, happiness, and success." (October 1, 2025).

Later that afternoon, Messmer referenced an ongoing government shutdown with a brief message: "#SchumerShutdown" (October 1, 2025).

Shortly after, he reassured constituents about the continuity of his offices’ operations during the federal shutdown. He stated: "Despite the #SchumerShutdown, my offices in Washington and Indiana are open and we will continue to serve the needs of #IN08. If you have any questions during the Government Shutdown, and until federal agencies open back up, we will do all we can to help you!" (October 1, 2025).

Messmer’s use of "#SchumerShutdown" refers to a partisan dispute over federal funding that led to a lapse in government operations. Such shutdowns typically occur when Congress fails to pass appropriations legislation or a continuing resolution before funding expires.

As background, members of Congress often maintain their district and Capitol offices open during government shutdowns to assist constituents with services affected by agency closures.
